I always dress in a more or less convoluted grunge style when I hang out with Jessi. When she visited Vegas last weekend, we hit the Strip in our leopard and leather and demanded that the arcade employees at Excalibur take pictures of us in exchange for playing their games. Definitely against the rules, but it was a slow night at the Midway... they needed our business! Also helps that we're a pair of flirty felines. Unfortunately our eyelash-batting didn't work on the security guard who yelled at me for crawling into a massive claw crane game full of basketballs. Obviously the centerpiece of this outfit is the SHAWTS!!!! Nothin' I like more than a little faux fur and animal print. I wish they were more form-fitting, but since they're made entirely of synthetic fiber and vinyl, there's no elastic material to hold them up. Hence the belt! And they have such cute pockets in the back... can't complain. We'll be selling this cut-off tank top at THE FABULOUS STAINS later this month. Keep your eyes peeled!

When I first laid out this outfit, I imagined that it'd be much more gauzy and gothic. The concept of a leather, velvet, and transparent robe triforce seems witchy... like maybe a Stevie Nicks stage costume. But when I paired the fundamentals (skirt, corset top, see-through shawl) with accessories better suited for a fancy dinner than rock concert, I ended up with this. Dressy party-wear for one of those events where everybody eats expensive cheese and talks about film noir. Don't get me wrong, I love me some brie, but my ideal affair is a tad darker... some witch house band playing a live set while everybody takes pictures of each other and eats barbecue potato chips.

I don't treat myself to new shoes too often (J FREAKIN K) but when I do, sometimes I value novelty over practicality. Not in this case. Amazing new gold embroidered dress to wear with my favorite bolero jacket, compliments to Sheinside.com! I'm sure you remember me raving about my bejeweled jacket back in October. Even though I've had it for years (and my mom owned it for years before I was even born), it still makes me froth at the mouth when I see it in my closet. Would I be overreacting if I said it deserved a shrine? I want to preserve it for eternity. Sometimes the golden threads come loose and I have to pull them away from the fabric. It's really tragic, makes me worry about my jacket's inanimate health. If there's one thing that separates me from other bloggers, it's how excited I get about things that most people would only passively appreciate. This shiny velvet "garment" is so much more than just an article of clothing... it's a wearable keepsake of memories.

"Remember me?" my tartan skirt asks. He made his last appearance in a preppy schoolgirl look, so I gave him another chance to woo you with his punkier potential. I wore this to class last week, and when I walked in, my professor said "you're all 80s punk today! I hope someone comes in wearing a mod 1960s look to balance it out." I told her that I'd wear a mod outfit next week. And that I take requests. Should I take requests? Yes, I think I should. If you have an idea, tell me here. There's a million and one ways to wear a plaid mini. I've seen Jessi rock a red kilt skirt with every color and shoe combo imaginable. Somehow it always looks good... kinda like plaid skirts have this all-powerful presence where whatever they say goes. Makes me want to get REALLY wild with experimentation... and by 'wild' of course I mean zebra print and leopard.

F-I-N-A-L-L-Y I have a new pair of black lace-ups. I've given up on the secondhand Doc Martens I bought at Buffalo Exchange last year. At first I thought the intense discomfort they caused was a normal consequence of them being stiff and unfamiliar to the shape of my foot. Nope. They were just two sizes too small and improperly labeled at the thrift store! Seven months and 500 band-aids later, my entire big toe-nail fell off from trauma and bruising. Wah wah wah. But now I own these ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, NO BUTTS ABOUT IT boots from Yes Style and they are actually, literally, undeniably, completely perfect, as in the most comfortable shoes I have EVER owned. I was walking to school the other day and I thought, "dude, you know what's cool? The fact that I haven't thought about my shoes in at least 20 minutes." Normally my mind is completely focused on the fact that my feet hurt. But lately, nah! In orthopedic bliss. Except for two nights ago when I had a nightmare about these insane nail bruises consuming all ten of my toes and woke up in EXCRUCIATING pain. What the heck is my problem?? That's the last time I wear tights while sleeping... man, I guess I have way more toe stories than I thought!

Not sure what you guys wear to parties, but I think this outfit here is an ideal look for me. Normally I wear giant heels, but I recognize that creepers are more functional because 1) they're easier to dance in and 2) you probably won't trip over in them while drunk-stumbling to the toilet in the guest bathroom. I layered on the jewelry for that 'heavy metal' look... one part music genre, two parts literal interpretation of the junk hanging from my neck and fingers. Aaaand I threw a Chanel necklace into the mix as a big 'eff you' to Coco for trying to convince me that minimalism is cool. Yeah right!!!! *raises red cup and chugs*

Since photographing this outfit, my beloved tortoiseshell sunglasses have snapped in half... I think they're beyond repair. Which is really hard to cope with because they were my favorite sunnies, possibly of all time. I guess I don't have a very good relationship with sunglasses. I either lose them or break them, which SUCKS because I develop deep emotional attachments to nearly every pair. Anyway, 'neutral scale' is pretty much the best summation of this look, right? Gray, white, ivory, and khaki. A good combo for February. Bummed because I think this might be the last month where it's still appropriate to wear Nordic print. Or maybe it's already too late to wear it and I'm just being my typical rogue self. The latter idea seems much cooler, but also potentially embarrassing. I think I accidentally wore a Christmas themed-shirt in late January many years ago when I was a freshman in high school. Not kidding, I have at least 100 anecdotes about wardrobe mishaps and malfunctions from my childhood and adolescence.

TWIGGY IN PASTEL GRADIENTS

When I first ordered this sweater, I didn't have any idea what I'd do with it. Simply fell in love with the cotton candy color scheme and called it a day! I'm a hardcore sucker for gradient fabrics... especially when they're pastel. Pretty much every characteristic this garment possessed (including the fact that it's a motherhonkin' sweater dress) coalesced into a fluid manifestation of wearable divinity that I can only describe as "God clothing." I tweeted about this phenomenon once, but I think you all thought I was kidding. That heavenly essence is REAL! And it just so happens to photograph extremely well. I held the sweater up to nearly everything in my closet, trying to find some decent layers to pile over and under it. Can you believe it? It's like my paisley blouse and knit cardigan were separated from this baby at birth. I went full force with the 60's theme, and instead of embracing Woodstock culture, I drew inspiration from icons like Twiggy, Edie, and... yes, Dianna Agron on the January 2012 cover of Nylon.

Mmmm, as the warmer weather draws near, so does my sartorial summer inspiration! Seriously?Who am I kidding. It's cold as a penguin's balls in Vegas and I'm drawing all my spring and summer inspo from travel fantasies and exotic postcards. This ensemble isn't particularly 'island breeze,' but it certainly references the kind of free-spiritedness that intoxicates gals like me in the springtime because we're so excited finally being able to lie in the grass without shoes on. My outfit is mostly white with a touch of pastel in my mint blouse. Spearmint and sea foam are definitely the trendiest colors right about now and here I am, hoppin on the Crest and Colgate bandwagon! Whatev. The subtle color definitely suits this delicate look - lace on lace with a floral accent and my House of Harlow circle sunnies. Hippie heaven, especially considering how angelic the silhouette looks in the light!

Bet you've never seen someone wear a VS Pink crop top in the context of a 'teen rebel collegiate runaway' before. Styling Victoria's Secret's latest line of Spring Break must-haves has been one of my most creative tasks to date. I tried to fit their shorts and tees into more unconventional looks that featured elements of beach grunge and party goth. I'll show you more looks later this week! Experimenting with brands that generally aren't associated with the style you wear most is an incredible way to challenge yourself, test your comfort zone, and push the limits of your creative vision. Wearing this breezy graphic tee with a pair of low-rise jeans and sandals would have been a total cop-out, that's why I went with a theme that's authentically 'me.'

Most people associate the color red with Valentine's Day since it's so bold and romantic. But since I've never really celebrated Valentine's Day with 'sensual intentions' (and also since the color red owns less than 5% of the real estate in my wardrobe) I decided to wear my favorite color today instead- baby pink! Subtle pastels are cute and cuddly, which is what V-day is ALL about in my book. Every year, my family celebrates by reminding each other how much the love in our family unit means to each of us. Boyfriends and crushes are just sweet but secondary novelties... kinda like conversation hearts! People who complain that Valentine's Day is merely an opportunity for single people to feel even worse about themselves completely forget about all the other kinds of love that exist in our world: love for friends, love for pets, love for family members, colleagues, TV shows, musicians, Reeses cups, and Sprite cans. There is so much MORE to be celebrated than romance!

Where did all this equestrian-inspired country flair come from? It's completely overwhelmed my wardrobe and now I only think in terms of denim and floppy hats. I have a million jillion pairs of jeans, but I'm seriously addicted to this particular pair of Gweneveres by Seven For All Mankind. I've had them since I was 15, so it's pretty cool that my big butt still squeezes into 'em. I wore this outfit a couple weeks ago when I ventured into the suburbs for a doctor's appointment. It was surreal being in my old environment wearing something I probably wouldn't have been caught dead in as a teenager. When I was younger, I had so much more to prove. Surely I've already told you about how I thought "fashion was for yuppies" and wore the same evergreen sweatshirt and moccasins on the daily. I thought it made me seem more 'distanced from materialism' but nonetheless 'true to my personal brand.' I've come a long way... and for that I deserve applause, people!!!! While putting together this look, I felt completely out of character. Belted blazers and plain pumps seem like a BBZV signature to you guys, but to me they actually feel kinda foreign. I'm most 'myself' in a sweeping robe and wide-brimmed hat, which I somehow don't blog about as much as I'd like to. Maybe it's because I think my readers would get bored with the same Halloween-derivative ensemble. Generally when I dress this swanky, it's to appease my mom, who wants me to perpetually look like I'm ready to step out onto Rodeo Drive. Which might also be why she wakes me up sometimes after I've already gone to sleep and forces me to curl my hair so I look presentable by the time it's morning. Sounds inconsiderate, but deep down I really appreciate her efforts to keep me well-coiffed. All that said, I do feel fondly about this look, because it's country club attire without compromising my streak of rock n' roll (as evidenced by my bold 80s wayfarers and leather pants.) There are ways to do conservative without surrendering to khaki slacks.

I'm first to admit that Vegas isn't a mecca for the fashion community. Though the Strip boasts a slew of designer retailers, there's not much street style going up and down the boulevard. Fortunately, a recent architectural development salvaged some of Vegas' fashion credibility -- City Center. Crystals, its resident shopping district, hosts some of the best couture in the city, including some of my personal favorites like Lanvin, Miu Miu, and Yves Saint Laurent. Yes, I'm talking about Assouline. Very fortunately I was already dressed in my bookstore best when I popped in. The intellectual atmosphere in Assouline completely affirmed my conviction that fashion is a science, not a vapid hobby. If I ever move into a mansion with an at-home mahogany library, Assouline is EXACTLY what it's going to look like.

It might be subtle, but my inspiration for this look was Zorro... yes, the caped outlaw on horseback. I'm not totally in costume, otherwise my massive circle sunnies would actually be a black bandana-mask-thing (am I stupid for not knowing the technical name?) and my purse would be a sword-holder and my heels would be leather boots for kicking villains' asses. Today is a very exciting day for me because I get to debut my DENIM ON DENIM! Fashion's most famous faux-pas happens to be my fave fundamental. Something about jeans on top AND bottom gives an outfit fluidity and closure. I think double denim was especially popular in the 90s, so I paired my iridescent Ralph Lauren pumps with a pair of cuffed skinny jeans for a throwback look. 2-inch stilettos have yet to make a comeback for the young and trendy. Nowadays, the It Factor is completely manifested in maximalism -- giant, platform Jeffrey Campbells, rainbows, spikes, and studs. So how's this for a change?

For those who wonder... my lipstick shade is "Centrifuschia" by Lime Crime. I've said it once and I'll say it again, Lime Crime's opaque lipstick collection is THE BEST I have ever used. No other lip product has ever worked more effectively for me. Not even M.A.C. I think I'm usually prone to wearing a bright color on my lips when the color palette for my outfit is "too neutral." With black, I almost always rock a deep red or mauve. Lipstick is an accessory, people! Might even be more important than a killer purse.

Don't mind me, I'm on my way back from the symphony. Yes, I conduct orchestras. I also compose sonatas and play the harpsichord in my free time. This is one of my more casual outfits... normally I wear a fitted tailcoat and bow tie, but tonight I wanted to be just a tad more comfortable. So I'm wearing a fuzzy cardigan and high-waisted cords! I wear black and white every single solitary day of my life as a testament to my obsession with conducting. You can't see it, but there's actually a small baton in my pocket. In some of my photos, I'm reaching in there to touch it. It's like my good luck charm... keeps me sane. I like the way it jabs at my thigh when I sit down because it reminds me of my precious career. I wore this outfit to the blogger flea market at Space 15 Twenty this weekend in Los Angeles. The weather treated me well in my shag jacket and despite all the walking I did up and down Sunset Blvd., my feet treated me pretty well, too! A long day of buying and selling in 6-inch platforms is no small "feet." (Remind me to punch myself in the face later today as punishment for my dumb pun.) Maybe I'm too into these reflective circle sunglasses? I've featured them in all three of my last outfits. I like that they're not your (unfortunately) typical pair of small black round frames. I loved pairing them with this Victorian-themed look because it added an element of antique futurism, especially characteristic of the steampunk style. Mirrored lenses aren't very old-fashioned, which is why incorporating them with fishnet and lace looks so novel. Goes without saying that novelty is VERY important to me. Hopefully I can do more with steampunk, but I think I'll need more elaborate props, like a pocket watch that turns into a mind-reading spacetime manipulator.

I'm not a pearl person. Really. Something about a strand of pearls seems so conservative and square to me. I also have a terrible habit of assuming all pearl necklaces are really just cheap costume jewelry, so it leaves the impression of being tacky. Which makes no sense at all, because I don't believe in spending thousands (or even hundreds) of dollars on jewelry, and my pearls are fake, and I'm a huge fan of tacky everything. Sometimes I can't understand myself! Perhaps my distaste for pearls comes from me just not liking the way they look and absolutely nothing to do with how much they cost. All that said, I'm fond of pearls on a gold chain. Just not in a strand. Maybe this is just a phase and next year I'll be so into pearl strands that I track the tag "pearl" on Tumblr and reblog millions of pictures of them and eventually start a fan club on Facebook. Wearing another corduroy newsboy cap with a sweater dress, NO pants, and an oversized blazer. But wait. Why are blazers called 'blazers'? I know I could find out in 180 seconds or less by opening up a new tab and typing 'blazer' into wikipedia, but I think prompting a dialogue about fashion terminology is much more fun than me reading about sport coats on the computer. So I'm gonna pretend I have really limited Internet access and all websites are actually blocked from my browser except Blogger and Flickr so the only access I have to trivial information is through asking my readers in the opening paragraph of every blog post. (Feelin a lil meta today!) About the outfit - it's called "Toffee Tweed" because (duh) my color scheme is toffee and my jacket is tweed. But talking about my clothes seems kinda boring and I'm extremely hungry so naturally I only want to talk about toffee. So, the color scheme speaks for itself (in a nearly muted beige whisper, just like Monday) with a splash of purple in a sea of mint foam. As for the newsboy cap? I always wear mine backwards to imitate a beret, but I figured I had nothing to lose wearing it 'correctly,' and at any rate, the only reason I'd been abstaining from wearing newsboy caps altogether was 1) they're SO Alyson Stoner in Cheaper By the Dozen 2003 and 2) nobody else wears them so it makes me uncomfortable. First of all, 2003 is the second most PERFECT year to draw inspiration from stylistically (only second to Winning London 2001) and second of all, since when do I need permission from my peers to wear something I wanna wear? Not every outfit of mine has a distinct theme; sometimes I just put a sweater on and try to look cozy and seasonal. I wore my new native batwing knit to coffee with a professor last month (my bangs have since grown and my middle-part has evolved into a side swoop) with my latest pair of lace-up clog boots for walking. Or butt kicking. I think I walk and kick butt equally frequently but I've never measured so maybe that's a broad assumption. Anyway, this winter in Vegas has been unbelievably mild. Like, 60 degrees in January. If that's not unbelievable, I don't know what is. So I have the liberty of wearing skirts and shorts without freezing to the core. As long as I've got a baggy sweater like this one on top.

I had the annoying backpack song from Dora the Explorer stuck in my head the entire time I was taking these pictures. But I do think my backpack deserves its own theme song. It was *ahem* $5.50 and ACTUALLY large enough to carry the 4,000 pounds of miscellaneous shit I choose to take with me to school everyday. If I see something on my way out, I'll throw it in my bag even if I can't think of a single reason why I'd need it. I think it all started in sixth grade when I was cleaning out my locker and found a paperclip on the floor. I almost threw it out, but then thought "WHAT IF I'll need this today?" because I'm obsessive compulsive and force myself to adopt extremely inconvenient superstitions. So I put it in my pocket. A few hours later, my friend's bracelet broke and I repaired it with the paper clip. I was intoxicated with pride. And ever since I've been hoarding insignificant junk in my purse just in case.

I'm one of those people who wears them regardless of the event (unless it entails walking a great deal) so the shoes hardly ever define whether or not the outfit is 'too dressy.' It doesn't seem too eager to wear a pair of light-wash denim shorts with patent pumps and a leather jacket. In fact, it seems like good middle-ground. Better to be overdressed than noticeably informal.

Christmas is over, but reindeer appreciation is a year round art form. I hate winter because the weather sucks (I don't see anything romantic about your nose going numb and not being able to form a coherent sentence because your teeth are loudly chattering against one another) BUT I do love that it's the season of sweaters. Before I left for Israel, I threw an outfit together that I thought would MAYBE be representative of Israeli style -- long skirts, floppy hats, gladiator sandals, and floor-length kimonos, all in a desert color palette. I was totally wrong, but the look was fun because it's referential to the story "Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors." I remember learning about it in Hebrew school. Probably watched an animated film about it. Definitely did a color-by-number. Torah/bible outfits are hugely underrated. Do not be surprised if within the next two weeks I come up with a "Prince of Egypt" ensemble.

In Israel, girls have gorgeous wavy hair that's so long it reaches their bum. They usually wear it middle or side-parted and, like me, they love a coat of red lipstick! The most popular get-up was a pair of high-waisted leggings with a leotard, tank, or t-shirt tucked in. So simple and perfect... I can't wait to return to the city and go vintage shopping.

These are a few pics from my trip! I took hundreds but narrowed it down to a smooth 9. Traveled everywhere from the Golan Heights to Tel Aviv... stayed in 2 kibbutzim, 1 youth hostel, 1 bedouin tent, and 1 Jerusalem hotel. Desert, sea, and Masada in between!

I'm sure you've heard people talking about how they choose what to wear according to how they feel that day. Well, assuming that you dress yourself as soon as you wake up, there's not a huge range of emotions to pick from when evaluating your general mood. Nonetheless, I think this look would best suit me on a day when I woke up and felt quiet and shy. Sounds absolutely absurd to know how quiet and shy you are before you've even left the house, but I guess sometimes you hop out of bed and aren't really ready to face the world with your usual extroverted aggression. In real life, I think I'm very excited and opinionated and eager to 'do stuff,' but I go through phases where I want to drink hot chocolate and brood quietly in a corner while reading Megan Boyle's latest book. On those days, I'd probably wear a black turtleneck. But a lace peter pan collar dress and beret work, too.

It took me a helluva time to select my favorite shade from the 55 colors offered, but I figured 'Evening Sand' would be the most practical choice. They're a peachy shade of pink that matches nearly every pastel garment I own. When I held them up to the light in my closet, I realized they were the perfect partner for my aqua Ralph Lauren sweater! A couple days later, my mom introduced the flowery Valentino bag to my collection and I nearly sobbed with how wonderful all my pastel pieces looked layered on top of each other. SO WHAT if I take getting dressed so seriously that I cry when things go eerily right...

Knock knock! Who's there? Orange! Orange who? Orange you SO RELIEVED it's finally cool enough to wear layers? Orange you excited to start breakin' out the ponchos and scarves? A few people at school accused me of being way too sensitive to moderate temperatures yesterday since I was the ONLY one with a cape. I nonchalantly whipped a scarf over my shoulder and said "it's all fashion baby," then stomped away in my wedges. That sounds a lot cooler on paper than it actually looked in real life. I carry a canvas tote AND messenger bag for my laptop most days of the week, so I'm always bogged down with stuff, my back hunched and feet struggling to balance in platforms while readjusting the enormous weight of my 8 pound computer.

This look is inspired by a street-style photo of Abbey Lee Kershaw. I especially love the shape of her aviator jacket, which falls so neatly over a scarf.

I tried to recreate the silhouette with a loose-fitting coat and tight, printed leggings. Mine are from a shop called STITCH UNION, and I'm kinda considering buying them in another color. They might be zany, but they're incredibly practical because they provide for an expansive color scheme. That, and the fact that they make people extremely happy. Everybody seemed really enthused about my legs of all things when I debuted 'em at college.

Something you might now know about me is that despite being a legal adult at the ripe age of 18, I still don't have a license to drive! Never even got my permit in high school. I don't really see any reason to drive at this point in my life, especially since the city transportation system gets me everywhere I need to be. It's also better for the environment, and doesn't require that I spend thousands of dollars annually on insurance. Wish Americans didn't have such pompous egos in thinking that they're 'too good' to ride the bus. But despite all that about me not having a car, it is one of my fantasies to own a motorcycle. Is it strange that I think careening through the city streets on a purring Harley would be somehow romantic? I imagine that it'd endear me to the world. This outfit features a motorcycle jacket with a very delicate flair, accented by my slightly fancier tights and shoes. Who says I can't ride a bike in heels??

Love this moto jacket because it's not uniform leather. It's mostly made of soft woven cotton, which I think makes it more feminine and functional. I paired it with a mini-skirt and moi new patent pumps for a super classic silhouette. Sometimes I get so caught up in horsing around in ankle boots and a jean jacket that I forget how fun it is to dress like I'm en route to ballet class or something.

I know, I know. The silver heel and dainty rhinestone clasps are the best part. That, and the fact that they were under $30.

I feel like I've worn different variations of the same pastel shades so many times that they speak for themselves at this point. After weeks of wearing brights, whites, and pastel pinks, I finally reverted back to my more subtle, goth-inspired tendencies. Did away with all the accessories but one braided belt and a cross necklace. Sometimes people ask if I ever get lazy with an outfit and opt for sweatpants instead of combat boots and a leather jacket. I think going monochrome is my idea of 'getting lazy,' because it's so simple to create an outfit with just one color scheme. That said, an outfit with prints a-plenty can be just as creative as an outfit with one solid from head-to-toe.

My style has evolved so profoundly throughout this past year (arguably for better or worse,) but a miniskirt, floppy hat, and cardigan -- all black -- will always feel familiar to me. I wouldn't exactly call this theme "timeless," surely sheer blouses will be passe in two years, but for now it captures an aesthetic that I'd hope most people can appreciate. Goth is nothing to be afraid of.

The best part about these shoes isn't the wooden platform, laces, and leather... it's the fact that they were only $10!!!! There's absolutely NO NEED to break the bank when looking for a pair of black booties. Yeah, I really went there! I'm in Aerosmith territory now, so get on my level and walk THIS way, y'all! I received this pair of leather True Religion pants from the LOOKBOOK.nu x eBay fashion collab and am working them the one and only way I find fitting: like a legend of rock. They fit like a glove - a fingerless leather glove, rather, and are probably the coolest things to have ever entered my denim drawer. Besides a pair of flame-print vinyl flares, but those are a little too 'pyro' to be considered practical (or fashion-friendly, if you want to be fair.) There's only one accessory I'm missing here, and it's a microphone. It also wouldn't hurt to hook up the botox and rhinoplasty so I can look as perfect as Steven Tyler in his golden age.

I'm probably too fond of this velvet-blazer-and-floppy-hat combination, because it means that I'll be wearing it way more often than is socially acceptable this winter. So I can either tame my obsession, OR I can buy more floppy hats and velvet blazers. I think I'll go with the latter. My outfit hardly has a theme, but perhaps you could call it a cross between cosmopolitan, collegiate, and a distantly related cousin of something nautical. The skirt is from my best friend Jessi, who bought if off eBay years ago and cast it aside in her GIGANTIC closet. I guess if you had a billion pastel tutus, you'd probably forget about vintage ruffle skirts every once in a while. Either way, I saved this one from abandon! Aye aye.

Anyway, I'm not really wasted, unless chugging 2 liters of wild cherry pepsi on a Monday morning counts as "hammered," "plastered," or in the words of Robert Lanham circa 2003, "shellacked." But I think if you were 'bout ready to mount your Harley Davidson and down a couple shots of Jack Daniels (what is it with badass things having badass first and last names?) you'd probably wear an outfit like this. Happy Halloween, everybody!! I can only pray that you're hoarding Reeses Cups in your air passages, suffocating from milk chocolate overkill and choking on your own drool as you crave another Kit-Kat wafer. And in the spirit of the season, you should have already gained as much weight as I have (9 lbs) otherwise you're not properly celebrating the holiday. Or life in general, really. Although I don't have any cool Halloween parties to attend and won't be so privileged to trick or treat in my neighborhood (I live in a high-rise condo!) I did NOT pass up the opportunity to create a novel costume. I'm a sucker for puns but gag at the sight of cliches and store-bought costumes. So, I designed my own ensemble and from very basic materials constructed this Gaga inspired get-up. I'm a plastic surgeon. But... literally. I'm made of plastic!

I fashioned a translucent bubble skirt tutu out of clear bags my mom used to store wrapping paper. The top half is a blouse underneath two more strips of see-through stuffing, held together by ANOTHER plastic bag, twisted into a minimal belt. The cap was simple; I grabbed a few sheets of paper and googled "how to make a nurse's hat from scratch." Fifteen minutes and one red sharpie later... voila! It's not Party City quality, but it photographed well-enough. I might give the impression of being a perfectionist, but secretly, I'm not. I'll take whatever route takes me to the most amount of peanut butter cups in the least amount of time. I think economists call that theory "efficiency." I call it *recites something catty enough to be published on a Cafe Press t-shirt about chocolate and menopause* #antihumor

Whichever t-shirt I used to consider the all-time coolest in my closet needs to MOVE OVER and make room for this bad boy. I recently acquired this perfectly symbolic, iconic, and borderline orthodox blasphemous tee from a French brand called CROSS SIGN. The designers print all sorts of religious imagery on cotton cut-offs to create a casually gothic aesthetic, perfect for a godless grunger. My favorite design is, of course, the one I'm bearing on my chest. Emblazoned with a series of spiritual wingdings, this t-shirt is BLACK OUT brilliance. And titled accordingly.

In case you're curious, this lipstick is from Lime Crime and called "MY BEAUTIFUL ROCKET." I swear by this brand of cosmetics because it's long-lasting, vibrant, opaque, and (duh) tastes like birthday cake. No other lipstick has ever maintained its quality with just one swipe. The shades are not sheer so they don't require constant re-application and lip gloss. I could really use a lifetime supply of this stuff...

GOLDEN CAGE

Ever knew what you wanted and fought so hard... only to find yourself sitting in a golden cage? I know the feeling. Sometimes it seems like nothing is more wonderful than tragedy, and maybe that's why we're all so in love with our depression. Guess I'm talking more about 'teen angst' than 'haute couture' but I think the whole process of growing up is relevant to the construction of personal style. Seems like most of my desire to dress outlandishly is rooted in a similar desire to rebel against society, or something less cliche, for refusing to embrace me 'with arms wide open' [via Creed]. I hope that I will always want things, and always have some indescribably lofty goal that I somehow, someday manage to achieve. Nothing is more humbling than the chase. And that's about as vulnerable as I'm gonna get for a while.

This vintage velvet bolero jacket is my most prized article of clothing. It idly hanged in my mom's closet for decades before I noticed that it was perfect. I wore it first on Halloween of 2009, when I dressed as a matador. Ever since, I've treated it as a perfectly normal, albeit extraordinary one-of-a-kind, addition to my wardrobe. The fringe tank is from Shop Moderne and the sunglasses and pants are from da Cobra Shop.

FATED TO BE CELEBRATED!

It totally slipped my mind that FATED TO BE HATED just had its first birthday! I started this sucker on October 11, 2010 and in 365 days time, its blossomed into my profoundest passion. In fact, I consider this blog a pet. It needs attention, affection, maintenance, a walk every once in a while, and a satisfying scratch behind the ears. In honor of its FIRST EVER anniversary, I decided to re-style an outfit I wore exactly one year ago! Coincidentally, I call this dress my "birthday frock" because it looks like the perfect floral garment for a party. If only I had a set of couture balloons and a couple velvet-textured birthday caps.

Here's the original post for comparison! I no longer own those cork-heeled Target wedges, so I opted for my Nine West espadrilles instead. And the scarf went from an accent for my purse to an accent for my waist! The dress is still perfect without it, but I love how the magenta marries all the Spring colors in my ensemble.

I would really like to use this 'cyber-celebration' as an opportunity to thank each and every person who has taken the time to follow along with Fated To Be Hated. I put a tremendous amount of effort and energy into keeping up with this project, and hearing your incredible words of encouragement affirms that my infatuation with fashion blogging is not in vain. Blogging is one part personal reflection, and two parts understanding and appreciating your audience. This endeavor would have quickly fizzled into oblivion had I not received such supportive feedback. And then I may have named my blog Fated to be Faded (Into the Background.) But my blog isn't fading into any background at all. After a year of waking up at 7 AM, chewing my nails in the closet in search of the perfect blazer, punching keys, tucking my feet into dangerously tight pairs of secondhand doc martens, yanking the neck of my tripod into place, posing beside my antique loveseat, and arranging my point-and-shoot camera on its timed capture setting, I'm more energized than ever. I've spent 12 months "falling into" my status as a blogger, and now that I know the ropes, I'm ready to transcend every convention established. I really want to push the envelope in 2012. Thank you all so, so much for leaving comments, checking for updates, and recommending this page to your friends. Just remember - every time someone bookmarks my site, an angel gets its wings!

The title says it all, friends. I would rather slip my feet into a supple pair of paisely patchwork clogs than open up my Blogger dashboard and hit "new post." I guess both are pretty therapeutic, which is why I'm wiggling my toes in the very pair of slip-ons I'm sporting in the following photos AS I type this. Does anyone else feel overwhelmingly meta right now? No one knows what I'm talking about? Less Philosophy 101, more wooden platforms!!!!!!!!!!!

Realistically, I could talk for twenty minutes about these clogs. I originally made them my formspring background because I feel like they define so much of my "brand." They're made by a company called Sanita -- which identifies as makers of "the original Danish clog since 1907" -- and are available on a site called Clog Outlet. Needless to say, the fact that an entire online WAREHOUSE dedicated to CLOGS makes me want to quietly cry tears of the purest ecstasy. When I'm not wearing these precious yellow European wonders, I'll be using them as furniture within my bedroom. I think they'd make great vases, and if it were the late 1990s, good cell phone carriers. The point is, these slip-ons are daisy print perfect.

You're wearing acorn slippers and clutching a piping hot cup of cocoa as you mosey through the rustically decorated rooms of your wooden mansion. Hey everyone, I'm Farm Girl. I live the good life, sleepin' in the barn with all my cute little animals. I love the smell of hay and milking cows is listed in my interests on Facebook. Call me WASHED OUT or WHITE OUT, I'm the pale queen in my colorless prints! Well, almost. My 'petticoat' is baby pink, after all. I layered a ruffly skirt underneath a cropped white shirt-dress to create some lace-on-scallops dimension. As usual, the frilly socks are my favorite accent to a feminine silhouette. Takes off at least five years! If I'm not mistaken for a twelve year old at least once per outing, I know there's something miserably wrong with my outfit. My next accessory is bound to be a bib... the new detachable collar?
